Exhibitions Guidelines

Exhibitions

General Criteria

NOTE:  For all exhibit spaces, the gallery co-ordinator will advise change-over dates and times.

The Manotick Art Association carries liability insurance only.  Insurance of artwork is the responsibility of the artist.

All work submitted to MAA Exhibitions will be assessed by receivers. Work must adhere to the following standard criteria and any other additional criteria for each particular exhibition to be accepted. MAA has the right to refuse any work that does not meet the criteria and/or is not deemed appropriate. The decision of the receiver is final.

  1. Work must be the original work of the member.
  2. Frames, where used, should be of solid construction and undamaged. Glass, if used, should be clean inside and out.
  3. Hanging work must have secure hardware with a strong wire or other appropriate hardware on the back.
  4. Any other media (e.g., sculpture, pottery) must be safely displayed and protected as necessary.
  5. Staples must not be visible on canvas pieces. Edges on unframed gallery depth canvas (1 ½” or greater) must be painted. The preference is that shallower depth canvas (less than 1 ½”) be framed, however, they can be displayed unframed with finished edges. Work on paper (i.e., watercolours, pastels) must be framed (with glass where appropriate). Wooden or masonite boards with finished edges are also accepted unframed.
  6. Securely attach a label to the back of the work with the name and phone number of the artist, the title, price and list of materials used and other contact information at the artist’s discretion (e.g., address, email, website).
  7. The artist must not remove their work until the end of the show/exhibition.
  8. MAA membership fees must be up to date for inclusion in a show/exhibition.
  9. Any damage to or loss of artwork and display material (e.g., shelves, tables) is the responsibility of the artist.
  10. For Shows Only:  Artists may display items such as prints (reproductions) on the floor or in racks or boxes. Art cards can be displayed on a table.
  11. Work must be family-friendly – specifically, no nudity, violence or gore.

Members need to take note of and abide by any additional criteria issued regarding each exhibition/venue and register if required. Additional criteria may include: size, theme, presentation, identification, etc.

Some of the events/exhibitions are juried. Jurying usually takes place at regular meetings of the members and will be announced at a preceding meeting and/or electronically.

millers_02

Back Room – space for two or three small pieces. Do NOT move the picture of the Queen!

Display system: Wooden rails affixed to walls: grid hooks (provided) fitted over rails
Smaller artworks may be hung one above the other if desired. You would need to bring your own cord or small chain to do this.
Miller’s Oven management (and apparently their clientele) has a strong preference for bright, colourful, cheerful artwork eg. flowers, landscapes, wildlife etc.

How to proceed:
Arrive at approx. 2:30pm (Miller’s Oven closes at 3pm). Hang artwork if tables by hanging space are vacant, otherwise wait until customers leave to avoid disturbing them.
Ensure grid hooks are securely fitted over the rail as recent repainting of the rails has caused some hooks to fit very tightly.
Attach MAA labels showing your contact info and price by taping labels to the back of the artwork. Do not tape labels to the wall.
